This sensational article written by a wheelchair bound 11 year old really brings out an otherwise unseen agenda in a current Hollywood movie (and much lauded book):
Me Before You: Dear Hollywood, Why Do You Want Me Dead?
This article is so impressive for so many reasons and there’s much I could say, but really, the most important thing here is that we spread it far and wide and have as many people as possible read it.
I’ll make only this point, and then I’ll shut up, so as to not detract from the power of what she’s said: Entertainment matters, and the worldviews and agendas present in our entertainment have a greater impact than we realise. TV and movie screens are the ‘preachers’ of our day, and by the time someone is an adult they’ve spent countless hours, days, weeks, and months, under the instruction of the screen. The worldviews they are being exposed to, the agendas and unspoken assumptions built into the worlds they are experiencing, the motives, fears, hopes, and dreams of the characters they are falling in love with, all combine to have a profound impact on how each of us views the world as adults.
So I’ll draw two conclusions; 1. Be smart about who you allow to ‘preach’ to you and your loved ones from the screen. Just because you enjoy a given piece of entertainment doesn’t make up for flaws in it’s view of the world or the assumptions it’s pushing on to you; and 2. This is why I’m working hard to enter the film and TV industry, because this stuff matters, and whilst there will only ever be a few people who will read my blog posts or watch my overtly political videos, if I can create high quality entertainment that appeals to the masses, then suddenly I’ll be able to reach a far wider audience with my worldview than I ever could through this blog.
But for the moment, this blog will have to do, so please share the article above, I think she deserves to be heard far and wide.
